A two-day introduction to wood engraving. Start by learning about all the elements required to create a wood engraving; the tools, wood, paper, printing materials and composition. By the end of the two days you will have had a sound introduction to wood engraving and have created your own wood block and print.

Of all artists’ printing methods, wood engraving has the advantage of needing the least equipment. It does not require a press but may be printed by hand. The cost of the basic tools and materials needed to produce a print is small, as is the space required to engrave and print a block. It requires minimal ink and small quantities of solvent, so there is little mess. Together these qualities make it very suitable for the keen amateur and it may be practised happily at home. It is a quiet, contemplative process, yet one that often results in characteristically strong images and has a deep tradition in Britain.

On the first day students will look at the tools, the marks they can make and how to use them to create tones. This will involve students making a tonal sampler, which will be engraved on plastic. The following day(s) will be spent by students engraving their own images onto wood. At the end of each day, we will print by hand-burnishing. Every step of the process will be explained and there will be many demonstrations. The teaching will involve both group instruction and one-to-one guidance.

The points covered in this course and the sequence in which they are presented provide a sound introduction to wood engraving. These will include:

• Tools: a close look at the engraving tools, their function and the marks they make.

• Wood: its qualities, the preparation of its surface and the transfer of a drawing onto it.

• Printing: the properties of ink, the use of the roller and printing by hand burnishing.

• Paper: its surface and suitablity for engraving.

• Composition: some of its difficulties and strengths when working in black and white.

All these points will be demonstrated and notes on them handed out, including a list of suppliers for the materials used.

This course will be suitable for those who are keen drawers and would like to print; however, there is no need to have any prior knowledge of printmaking.
