Journey through time and hear tales of Knowle West, told by those who call it home...

Knowle West Media Centre presents two new artworks, made by Knowle West residents and artists Holly Beasley-Garrigan and George Lovesmith through the project 100 Years of Knowle West Style.

Since Spring 2019, the100 Years programme has been uncovering, exploring and celebrating the living heritage of Knowle West, which is full of stories, characters and histories that are often overlooked and under-valued.

Book your free one-hour slot and experience both artworks.

About the artists: Holly Beasley-Garrigan

Holly is a performance-maker and choreographer originally from South London and now based in Bristol. Through the 100 Years project, Holly has developed the installation  I, OBJECT with  local residents and emerging filmmaker and Knowle West resident Dee Hassan. Holly has interviewed one person born in each decade since the Knowle West estate was built and  aims to reflect almost a century of lived experience via exploration of the everyday objects people hold dear. Listen, explore, and contrast the utopian dreams of the estate's architects to the voices of the people who live here...

Holly grew up on the St. Helier estate in South West London, an estate with many historical parallels to Knowle West. She says: ‘’My experiences growing up on, and then leaving, this estate have become central to my practice as an artist. Stories from estates like Knowle West are interesting and relevant but they are often lost, judged or not given the platform they deserve.’’

About the artists: George Lovesmith

George is an architect, artist and educator. Over the last few months, he has been collecting stories that catalogue the DIY hacks, adaptations, and decorations visible in many Knowle West homes and gardens. Visit the pop-up studio where George has been working with local sewers and textile enthusiasts to create a beautiful embroidered piece that contrasts the uniform design of the estate with the flair and creativity of local people.

He says: "The 100 Years project is an opportunity to ask: ‘how can we celebrate the thing you would lie down in front of a bulldozer to protect? Which bits justify some nurture? What makes you roll up your sleeves and get stuck-in?'”
