Alchemy, the ancient practice which gave rise to modern science, it theorised that if all matter is composed of a limited number of elements, once the art of purification and perfection is found it should then be applicable to all branches of endeavour. This art sought paths to power and riches but also routes to healing the human body and human soul. The alchemists sought a mystic transmutation from the corrupt and ephemeral to the pure and eternal.

Modern science though has none of these naive beliefs. Can base materials be transformed  ‘into something rich and strange’ in this magic-free, rational, utilitarian age? The five artist in this show each apply their own alchemical practice to base matter.
