Initiated as a long-term artwork in the form of a real estate technology company, New Eelam has brought together a team of specialists across the fields of finance, architecture, technology and art to develop a new form of housing for global living. Founded by artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas, the venture is an ongoing experiment to explore how a post-capitalist economy could be grown out of the existing economic system rather than in opposition to it.

New Eelam: Bristol presents a sci-fi vision of an alternate reality. The 'concept space' at Spike Island – developed in collaboration with New Eelam’s Creative Director Annika Kuhlmann as part of the venture’s ongoing research and development process – features technologies such as hydroponic home-farming systems presented as living sculptures. A newly commissioned series of micro videos proposes how a more liquid form of citizenship could be constructed beyond national boundaries.
