Through a transformation of objects, materials and her own body, Ochkovskaya’s work attempts to reveal an element of the “unknown”, whilst simultaneously exploring the sensuality of “thingness”.
The artist said:
“I would like to deconstruct the normative perception of the human body and common objects in the familiar spaces. During the twelve week residency at Aspex I am interested in pursuing the development of a video performance within a site-specific installation”.
By associating the transformation of materials and the organic mutation of her body through video, the artist aims to make a statement about impermanence and continuous change in our existence. Ochkovskaya believes that everything is subject to change and alteration.
Through revealing her artistic process Ochkovskaya would like to offer audiences new and alternative ways to interpret an existing moment in their lives. The artist’s video installations transport spectators to a fictitious environment, in order to better understand ourselves and the world within us.
About the Platform Graduate Award Alumni Residency
The Platform Graduate Award is an exhibition showcasing creative graduates from Universities across the South of England.
Aspex selects artwork by two students studying Fine Art and Photography from higher education partners: The University of Portsmouth, The University of Creative Arts Farnham (UCA), The University of Chichester, Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), Southampton Solent and Winchester School of Art (University of Southampton).
The Platform Graduate Award is an initiative led by CVAN South East (Contemporary Visual Arts Network South East) and is a partnership between five galleries: Aspex, De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea, MK Gallery in Milton Keynes, Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary in Margate.
As of 2016, alumni of the award received the opportunity to apply for a solo residency at the gallery, offering them a space to develop their artwork and process. Previous recipients of the residency opportunity include Charlotte Bradley, graduate of The University of Creative Arts Farnham (UCA).
