Opening Hours: Wednesday - Sunday, 11am - 4pm

Push & Pull comprises large sculptural works in wood, plaster and thread, alongside a series of woven hangings.

Cruickshank’s work experiments with form and materials, and processes of invention and making. Push & Pull  alludes to the relationship between material, machine and maker. This push and pull reflects a process grounded in discovering by doing, by making, and in ideas of thinking through making.

The artist’s studio, located in Essex, is in three converted grain silos where he develops his own machinery, materials and production procedures. He has made improvised lathes, makeshift weaving machines, printing presses, and developed water-carving processes to make artwork from timber, concrete, plaster, wool, thread and paint.

Through this making process his work explores the boundaries between sculpture, craft and design. Push & Pull is supported by the Henry Moore Foundation and Knauf.

The artist worked with Aspex in 2011, and has exhibited in group shows: Between Things, The Minories Galleries, Colchester, Essex, 2017; Creekside Open, APT Gallery, London, 2015; Survey, Standpoint Gallery, London, 2009; Combine (2007) and Shampoo (2009), Studio 1.1, London.

The artist has undertaken residencies and fellowships: Artist in Residence, Supernormal Festival, Oxfordshire, 2010-2014; Working Title Residency, Aspex, Portsmouth, 2011; Artist in Residence, Coleman Project Space, London, 2008; Arts Council England International Artists Fellowship, initiated by Braziers International Artists Workshop,  Lijiang Studios/Golden Dragon Street Studios, Zhongdian, Yunnan Province, China, 2007. He studied Fine Art (Sculpture) at Manchester School of Art – Manchester Metropolitan University, 1994-97
